- “Decolonize Turtle Island”, textile, Montreal
(Special thanks to my friends Zola + Stela)
End the exotification, fetishization, and tokenism of indigenous peoples on indigenous land! Decolonize Art & Culture! With this statement, we want to aknowledge that the public space we are using to create streetart is on stolen Native land. The city of Montreal rests on territory that was never given away or traded by the Kanien’kehá:ka Nation. Doing street art without regards to the History of these territories perpetuates colonialism. We hereby stand in solidarity with Idle no More and other grassroots Indigenous movements resisting colonialism everywhere in Turtle Island, and join forces with the settlers for the decolonization of this Land and of our relationships. As a concrete effort to bring up political issues regarding colonialism, we have created these solidary messages, in our way, in the streets. ——
